THE ENGINE 4
This edition of THE ENGINE will deal with artificial intelligence and poetry (or, better still, the relationship of technology to art), or AI as it is known to fans of Steven Spielberg. This, in brief, is the idea that computers and machines can be taught to think independently by humans and of humans. The reasoning goes, that if the creativity of humans is more or less equalised in terms of artistic value, then why should we not also think that non-human entities might also create, and in any case, what is it that is unique about the creativity of some or all? I would argue that our ideas of individual creativity, and even the concept of ‘genius’ are the legacy of 19th Century Romanticism. The movement which we know as Romanticism and which in Germany was called Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) implied that certain people who we call artists, possess specialised skills that they were not taught and which are in fact unteachable, or that some aspects of the artist’s craft is teachable and that other aspects originate from an innate, possibly genetic source. In this sense Mozart was not ‘made’, he was ‘born’. We call this ‘talent’ or ‘genius’. The German Romantics took this cult of individualism to an extreme, by deliberately cultivating eccentricity and ‘madness’ as a sign of their genius. Their behaviour was unconventional but it was not madness in any clinical sense. Contrastingly, the Enlightenment movement of rationalism, logic and order, perceived the human subject as being more or less equalised with other human subjects, given similar environments and opportunities.
The changing relationship between man, nature and the machine has been observed since at least the beginning of the 19th Century, if not before. We all remember Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein and the creation of Frankenstein’s monster from human parts. With the advent of the era of the computer and robot, it is no longer necessary to think that wayward robbers of morgues and graves like Frankenstein need exist. Artifical humans can be built from non-human parts, but can they be made to think like humans? Another parallel movement of man and machine appeared at roughly the same time as Mary Shelley’s novel, the phenomenon of Luddism. This was a direct product of the Industrial Revolution, which was located mainly, but not exclusively, in Britain. In short, the managers of factories wished to utilise machines which would take the place of human labour. This would increase profits and decrease labour cost. There would only be a minimal requirement of labour, those workers needed to man the machines. Many labourers would be dispensed with and the new kind of labour would be much more specialised than had been the case in the previous machine production era. The benefits were obvious, more profit and the knock-on effect of higher productivity and lower labour costs. Even though the owners of the machines might profit from this, in the main, there would be a ‘trickle down’ effect. The employers would have to spend their cash on goods and services, the skilled workers would be more highly paid than the labourers of the past. The trickle down effect would percolate through society producing more wealth, more leisure time and eradicate many of the hardships of pre-industrial production, where life was invariably short and unpleasant. The opposition to this process came from those labourers or craftsmen who could not rationalise the process of change and who also stood to lose their jobs. They also perceived the new relationship between man, nature and the machine as ‘unnatural’ in the sense that it replaced a former relationship that they had felt to be ‘natural’ and ‘normal’. These were the followers of Ned Ludd, machine breakers who insisted on attacking the non-human threat to their existence. In our own era, the computer revolution has necessitated similar changes. The industrial heartlands of Northern Europe have disappeared, most heavy industry has moved away to the Far East. In its place came the computer revolution and the new technologies it spawned. Obviously the old working class elites, the group styled the ‘aristocracy of labour’ by Socialists, fought this process in Britain. They were beaten in what is regarded by the Left as a ‘historic defeat’ for the working classes in Britain.
My underlying point is that the relationships of man, nature and machine are by no means either ‘natural’ or ‘unnatural’, and that any formulation of ‘nature’ must in any case be linked to an understanding of the concept of ‘culture’. Those relationships may change constantly, but the underlying assumption is that we need machines as tools and have needed them for as long as civilisation has existed. It may be that there are aspects of this civilisation that we dislike or would like to change, there are also those we regard it as ‘civilisation’, in that it is not civilisation at all, but barbarism. The problem encountered by those thinkers who rejected the notion of ‘civilisation’, such as the 19th Century philosopher and political activist, Karl Marx, is that machines cease to be autonomous human tools, and instead enslave man. (In my schema, a hammer is a tool, but a bicycle is clearly a machine. A hammer is a tool necessary for the manufacture and production of machines and therefore simply a proto-machine.) Obviously this process is initiated by the owners of capital and factories who originated those processes but who do not necessarily own or foresee the end results. Instead of machines being useful tools, they become agents of human misery. Finally humanity is sealed within a tomb of its own devising. Machines have taken the place of humans. Man is the servant of the machine, not the machine the servant of man, man is mastered by the system, not the master of the system.
The philosopers of AI might take this one step further and say that this is no bad thing. Eventually we will be able to acquire electonic, microchip-controlled replacement limbs and kidneys. Ultimately scientists will be able to replace the human brain with a computer, programmed no doubt with ‘synthetic’ human memories and emotions. The concept of being ‘born’ and ‘dying’ will be subsitituted with the concept of ‘replacement’. Humanity will become cybernetic. We will in fact become androids, robots, cyborgs. Those who wish to (or perhaps there may not be this freedom of choice, machines were originally brought in undemocratically, the changes were not outlined to those who would suffer from those changes, those changes were imposed and this resulted in a rebellion against change.) can remain human and face the human dilemma of birth and death, the human race a dwindling herd relegated perhaps to performing menial labouring tasks for its robotic masters.
This future can only occur when AI is proven to work, and this requires, in the first place, an emotional relationship between man and machine. Only when man feels empathy for the machine can the machine begin to take on human characteristics. Perhaps this change will occur, and I realise that this has more to do with those gimcrack areas of science presently perceived as beyond the lore of conventional science. A machine cannot take on the human characteristics of thought and emotion without this necessary leap, but it is a leap which implies an understanding as much to do with Extra-Sensory-Perception, Crop Circles or UFOs as microchips, software and A drives. However, might it not also be said that the idea of space travel would have been unconceivable only 2000 years ago, a short step in terms of the time we know that the Universe has existed. Sufferers from autism have been known to form relationships with objects, it has also been said that most people live somewhere on the autism spectrum. There are other aspects of human behaviour and cognition that science is completely unable to account for, even the most basic phenomena, such as why we require sleep or why we yawn.

An Introduction to AI poetry by Lewis La Cook
My use of computer-generated text is more a matter of breaking out of stylistic habits....also, there's something very I Ching about it---the poetry generator was created in August 2001, and was a useful tool for a while, but the works are VERY predetermined in its case (it works based on templates I set up within it). I recently created a text generator for prose poems that works more along random lines (it must be keep in mind, also, that machines do not truly understand random choices, they simply seed their choices in varying ways) in that for one, each word is chosen by the machine...the user still feeds the program words (20 nouns, 20 verbs) but the placement of those choices and some arrays of prepositions and connectors is seeded randomly....thus one ends up with things like:

This edition of THE ENGINE will deal with artificial intelligence and poetry (or, better still, the relationship of technology to art), or AI as it is known to fans of Steven Spielberg. This, in brief, is the idea that computers and machines can be taught to think independently by humans and of humans. The reasoning goes, that if the creativity of humans is more or less equalised in terms of artistic value, then why should we not also think that non-human entities might also create, and in any case, what is it that is unique about the creativity of some or all? I would argue that our ideas of individual creativity, and even the concept of ‘genius’ are the legacy of 19th Century Romanticism. The movement which we know as Romanticism and which in Germany was called Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) implied that certain people who we call artists, possess specialised skills that they were not taught and which are in fact unteachable, or that some aspects of the artist’s craft is teachable and that other aspects originate from an innate, possibly genetic source. In this sense Mozart was not ‘made’, he was ‘born’. We call this ‘talent’ or ‘genius’. The German Romantics took this cult of individualism to an extreme, by deliberately cultivating eccentricity and ‘madness’ as a sign of their genius. Their behaviour was unconventional but it was not madness in any clinical sense. Contrastingly, the Enlightenment movement of rationalism, logic and order, perceived the human subject as being more or less equalised with other human subjects, given similar environments and opportunities.
The changing relationship between man, nature and the machine has been observed since at least the beginning of the 19th Century, if not before. We all remember Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein and the creation of Frankenstein’s monster from human parts. With the advent of the era of the computer and robot, it is no longer necessary to think that wayward robbers of morgues and graves like Frankenstein need exist. Artifical humans can be built from non-human parts, but can they be made to think like humans? Another parallel movement of man and machine appeared at roughly the same time as Mary Shelley’s novel, the phenomenon of Luddism. This was a direct product of the Industrial Revolution, which was located mainly, but not exclusively, in Britain. In short, the managers of factories wished to utilise machines which would take the place of human labour. This would increase profits and decrease labour cost. There would only be a minimal requirement of labour, those workers needed to man the machines. Many labourers would be dispensed with and the new kind of labour would be much more specialised than had been the case in the previous machine production era. The benefits were obvious, more profit and the knock-on effect of higher productivity and lower labour costs. Even though the owners of the machines might profit from this, in the main, there would be a ‘trickle down’ effect. The employers would have to spend their cash on goods and services, the skilled workers would be more highly paid than the labourers of the past. The trickle down effect would percolate through society producing more wealth, more leisure time and eradicate many of the hardships of pre-industrial production, where life was invariably short and unpleasant. The opposition to this process came from those labourers or craftsmen who could not rationalise the process of change and who also stood to lose their jobs. They also perceived the new relationship between man, nature and the machine as ‘unnatural’ in the sense that it replaced a former relationship that they had felt to be ‘natural’ and ‘normal’. These were the followers of Ned Ludd, machine breakers who insisted on attacking the non-human threat to their existence. In our own era, the computer revolution has necessitated similar changes. The industrial heartlands of Northern Europe have disappeared, most heavy industry has moved away to the Far East. In its place came the computer revolution and the new technologies it spawned. Obviously the old working class elites, the group styled the ‘aristocracy of labour’ by Socialists, fought this process in Britain. They were beaten in what is regarded by the Left as a ‘historic defeat’ for the working classes in Britain.
My underlying point is that the relationships of man, nature and machine are by no means either ‘natural’ or ‘unnatural’, and that any formulation of ‘nature’ must in any case be linked to an understanding of the concept of ‘culture’. Those relationships may change constantly, but the underlying assumption is that we need machines as tools and have needed them for as long as civilisation has existed. It may be that there are aspects of this civilisation that we dislike or would like to change, there are also those we regard it as ‘civilisation’, in that it is not civilisation at all, but barbarism. The problem encountered by those thinkers who rejected the notion of ‘civilisation’, such as the 19th Century philosopher and political activist, Karl Marx, is that machines cease to be autonomous human tools, and instead enslave man. (In my schema, a hammer is a tool, but a bicycle is clearly a machine. A hammer is a tool necessary for the manufacture and production of machines and therefore simply a proto-machine.) Obviously this process is initiated by the owners of capital and factories who originated those processes but who do not necessarily own or foresee the end results. Instead of machines being useful tools, they become agents of human misery. Finally humanity is sealed within a tomb of its own devising. Machines have taken the place of humans. Man is the servant of the machine, not the machine the servant of man, man is mastered by the system, not the master of the system.
The philosopers of AI might take this one step further and say that this is no bad thing. Eventually we will be able to acquire electonic, microchip-controlled replacement limbs and kidneys. Ultimately scientists will be able to replace the human brain with a computer, programmed no doubt with ‘synthetic’ human memories and emotions. The concept of being ‘born’ and ‘dying’ will be subsitituted with the concept of ‘replacement’. Humanity will become cybernetic. We will in fact become androids, robots, cyborgs. Those who wish to (or perhaps there may not be this freedom of choice, machines were originally brought in undemocratically, the changes were not outlined to those who would suffer from those changes, those changes were imposed and this resulted in a rebellion against change.) can remain human and face the human dilemma of birth and death, the human race a dwindling herd relegated perhaps to performing menial labouring tasks for its robotic masters.
This future can only occur when AI is proven to work, and this requires, in the first place, an emotional relationship between man and machine. Only when man feels empathy for the machine can the machine begin to take on human characteristics. Perhaps this change will occur, and I realise that this has more to do with those gimcrack areas of science presently perceived as beyond the lore of conventional science. A machine cannot take on the human characteristics of thought and emotion without this necessary leap, but it is a leap which implies an understanding as much to do with Extra-Sensory-Perception, Crop Circles or UFOs as microchips, software and A drives. However, might it not also be said that the idea of space travel would have been unconceivable only 2000 years ago, a short step in terms of the time we know that the Universe has existed. Sufferers from autism have been known to form relationships with objects, it has also been said that most people live somewhere on the autism spectrum. There are other aspects of human behaviour and cognition that science is completely unable to account for, even the most basic phenomena, such as why we require sleep or why we yawn.

An Introduction to AI poetry by Lewis La Cook
My use of computer-generated text is more a matter of breaking out of stylistic habits....also, there's something very I Ching about it---the poetry generator was created in August 2001, and was a useful tool for a while, but the works are VERY predetermined in its case (it works based on templates I set up within it). I recently created a text generator for prose poems that works more along random lines (it must be keep in mind, also, that machines do not truly understand random choices, they simply seed their choices in varying ways) in that for one, each word is chosen by the machine...the user still feeds the program words (20 nouns, 20 verbs) but the placement of those choices and some arrays of prepositions and connectors is seeded randomly....thus one ends up with things like:
